ताज होटल को बनने में करीब 14 साल लगे थे और साल 1903 में गेस्ट के लिए खोला गया था। ताज होटल साल 1903 में खुला था, इसकी नींव जमशेदजी टाटा ने डाली थी। साल 1889 में टाटा ग्रुप के संस्थापक जमशेदजी टाटा ने अचानक ऐलान किया कि वे बॉम्बे में एक भव्य होटल बनाने जा रहे हैं जमशेदजी टाटा ने जब ताज होटल बनाने का ऐलान किया तो उनके परिवार में ही फूट पड़ गई। टाटा की बहनें उनका विरोध करने लगीं। लेखक हरीश भट पेंगुइन से प्रकाशित अपनी किताब ‘टाटा स्टोरीज’ में लिखते हैं कि जमशेदजी टाटा की एक बहन ने गुजराती में कहा, ‘आप बैंगलोर में साइंस इंस्टिट्यूट बना रहे हैं, लोहे का कारखाना लगा रहे हैं और अब कह रहे हैं कि भतारखाना (होटल) खोलने जा रहे हैं’? हरीश भट लिखते हैं कि जमशेदजी टाटा के दिमाग में बॉम्बे में भव्य होटल बनाने का आइडिया यूं ही नहीं आया था, बल्कि इसके पीछे एक कहानी और बदले की आग थी। उन दिनों में बॉम्बे के काला घोड़ा इलाके में स्थित वाटसन्स होटल (Watson’s Hotel ) सबसे नामी हुआ करता था, लेकिन वहां सिर्फ यूरोप के लोगों को प्रवेश मिलता था। एक बार जमशेदजी टाटा वहां पहुंचे तो उन्हें यूरोपियन न होने के चलते एंट्री नहीं मिली। यह बात उनके दिल में बैठ गई थी। इसके अलावा उन दिनों बॉम्बे में एक भी ऐसा होटल नहीं था जो यूरोप या पश्चिमी देशों का मुकाबला कर सके। भट लिखते हैं कि जमशेदजी टाटा अक्सर अमेरिका, यूरोप और पश्चिमी देशों की यात्रा किया करते थे और वहां होटल और दूसरी सुविधाओं को देखा था। साल 1865 में ‘सैटरडे रिव्यू’ में एक लेख छपा, जिसमें लिखा गया था कि बॉम्बे को अपने नाम के अनुरूप अच्छा होटल कब मिलेगा? यह बात भी टाटा के दिल को लग गई थी। जमशेदजी टाटा, ताज होटल के लिए सामान खरीदने दुनिया के कोने-कोने तक गए। लंदन से लेकर बर्लिन तक के बाजार खंगाल डाले। ताज होटल भारत का ऐसा पहला होटल था जहां कमरों को ठंडा रखने के कार्बन डाइऑक्साइड बर्फ निर्माण संयंत्र लगाया गया था। होटल के लिए लिफ्ट जर्मनी से मंगवाई गई थी, तो पंखे अमेरिका से आए थे। हॉल के बाल रूम में लगाने के लिए खंभे पेरिस से आए थे। उन दिनों ताज होटल की कुल लागत 26 लाख रुपये तक पहुंच गई थी। आखिरकार साल 1903 में जब ताज होटल खोला गया तब इसके कमरों का किराया 6 रुपये प्रति दिन रखा गया। यह लगभग और होटलों के बराबर ही था। लेकिन पहले दिन होटल में महज 17 गेस्ट पहुंचे। आने वाले कुछ दिनों तक स्थिति लगभग ऐसी ही रही। ताज होटल के खर्चों ने जमशेदजी के सामने आर्थिक संकट खड़ा कर दिया। कुछ लोग इसे जमशेदजी का ”सफेद हाथी” तक कहने लगे।

Once Jamshedji Tata reached there, he was not allowed entry because he was not a European. This thing stuck in his heart. Apart from this, there was not a single hotel in Bombay in those days that could compete with Europe or Western countries. Bhat writes that Jamshedji Tata often traveled to America, Europe and Western countries and saw the hotels and other facilities there. In 1865, an article was published in 'Saturday Review' in which it was written that when will Bombay get a good hotel as per its name? This matter also touched Tata's heart. Jamshedji Tata went to every corner of the world to buy goods for the Taj Hotel. He searched the markets from London to Berlin. The Taj Hotel was the first hotel in India where a carbon dioxide ice-making plant was installed to keep the rooms cool. The lift for the hotel was ordered from Germany, while the fans came from America. The pillars for the hall's ballroom came from Paris. In those days, the total cost of Taj Hotel had reached Rs 26 lakh. Finally, when Taj Hotel was opened in the year 1903, the rent of its rooms was kept at Rs 6 per day. This was almost equal to other hotels. But on the first day only 17 guests arrived at the hotel. The situation remained almost the same for the next few days. The expenses of Taj Hotel created a financial crisis for Jamshedji. Some people even started calling it Jamshedji's "white elephant".
